What is a currency converter?

A currency converter is a calculator that expresses an amount in one currency as its estimated value in another. A current exchange rate connects the two values, so a currency exchange converter can answer questions such as how much 100 US dollars are worth in euros or how many Malaysian ringgit equal 50 Singapore dollars.

Currio supports everyday calculations across a broad range of world currencies. It is useful when planning a trip, comparing international prices, reviewing a foreign invoice or checking the approximate value of a card purchase.

How currency conversion works

The calculation uses a simple formula: amount in the source currency × exchange rate = estimated amount in the target currency. If 1 unit of the source currency equals 0.92 units of the target currency, multiplying 100 by 0.92 produces an estimated result of 92.

Currio receives rates against a common base currency and calculates the cross-rate for the pair you select. This lets the calculator currency converter handle pairs that do not include US dollars. You can reverse the currencies at any time to see the calculation in the opposite direction.

Why exchange rates change

Currency prices move as supply and demand change in global markets. Interest-rate decisions, inflation, economic growth, trade, political events and expectations about future conditions can all affect how traders value one currency against another.

Rates may move throughout the day, while consumer services can refresh their data on different schedules. That is why a currency converter today can show a different result from yesterday’s calculation. Currio displays the time of the latest available update so you can judge how current the estimate is.

The converter rate and the rate you pay

An exchange rates currency converter normally shows an indicative market rate. A bank, card network, ATM, payment service or cash exchange office may use a retail rate and add a spread, percentage markup or fixed fee.

Use the converted result as a reference, then compare the provider’s final amount including every fee. The calculator does not guarantee the settlement amount on a card statement, bank transfer or cash receipt.
